aaaggghhh bloooooooody exhaust
« on: 07 September 2011, 20:18 »
does anybody els have this problem.
i have a sebring vr6 exhaust fitted to my 8v and the middle box is heavyer on one side than the other as the pipe on the left side of the box (as you look from th efront of car)curls out from middle pipe into side of middle box.

i spent ages getting it all to sit perfect and tightened it all up realy tight.
i drive it for a few days and due to weight on one side it graduly twists at the joints and the curve out pipe hangs low making part of the exhaust rattle against the middle axhaust hanging bracket. gggrrr its so anoying.

anybody els get this?
if so how did you solve it?

mine seems like its about 40mm to short as the bit of pipe that goes through the middle of the centre hanger curves to early and is about 8mm from the hanger.
it curvs right inside the hanger rather than just after it if you no what i mean.
but even if it was longer it still wouldnt stop it twisting due to weight on one side of middle box.

I bent the Y bracket out and up on the drivers side and fitted two different size rubbers.
Mk4 Cortina and Powerflex
i also slotted the bracket holes so i could position the pipe work exactly right.
Then i got the exhaust hot,( its amazing how much it grows and distorts) and checked the fitting from underneath and adjusted position (gloves a must).
I used a fairy soft mount at the rear to allow a bit more expansion and movement, seems to stop clamps from slipping........

Get good quality clamps from an exhaust supplier that fit, halfords ones are shocking :lipsrsealed:

Its quiet now

ok just spent 3 hours under my car with not alot of space. bottom of car about an inch from my face.
sorted exhaust once and for all.
got rid of the sebring strait pipe between cat and middle box and replace it with a propper VR6 one and that clamps over the cat and gets rid of that bloody sleeve thing that just lets it all twist.
was a total nightmare geting it on though. bit of wood and a lump hammer then took the middle box and backbox off and put back on one bit at a time.
putting middle box on was a pain as lack of room and the box wouldnt fit between middle pipe and suspension beam till it was all the way on the pipe.
alot of swearing and hammering later also had to squeeze it up with trolly jack. them hammer loads till it was clear enough from the beam not to touch it. totaly smashed my thumb nail up
and backbox was easy to put on.

no way it can twist now BUT it was still tapping the middle hanger so i pulled it across away from where it was tapping and slid the rubbers to one side to hold it away from it then used small jubalee clips on the hanger to stop the rubbers moving back that way and hay presto all sorted. thank fcuk for that.
