Do i need an external oil cooler? 8v 155bhp
« on: 01 September 2011, 18:06 »
Basically ive got an 8v digi engine heavily modified which has been dyno'd at 155bhp,

Ive no experience with cooling and was wondering if ill need an external oil cooler or will the standard water cooled one be up to the job?

External oil cooler is better than none, especially if you exploit your car on a regular basis, a 10 row cooler, should be more than sufficient for your requirements...

I'd say it depends on the temps your oil gets to..? From what I've read 100-120 ish is ok, but you don't want to go much higher.. Have you got an oil temp sensor on mfa? If so what does it read?

Ah ok, well when its in and ran in you shouldnt be seeing oil temps above 110. If you do its very easy to install a cooler post engine install. As thom said you only need a wee one and a sandwich thermo plate with feed and return.

Run it with an oil temperature gauge.

As above, if it's topping out above 110-115 deg C then fit a cooler.

If not, don't bother.

Retain the oil:water cooler - it helps warm the engine oil faster, prolonging the engine's life.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
