FK AK coilover susension (where from?)
« on: 18 April 2005, 15:10 »
I'm after some FK AK coilovers this week for GTI16V. I've just tried AwesomeGTI at £299.99 but they have at least a two week wait for the next delivery at the moment, was even going to collect them today.

Anyone know anywhere else with them in stock for the same price? I'm after them pretty quickly unfortunatley, & want to fit them by the weekend while I fix my anti-roll bar, etc.

I was thinking of getting this kit, please let us know what its like, quality, fitting and handling

I understand its not as good as the more expensive coiover kits but it looks like a good deal.

I was thinking of getting this kit, please let us know what its like, quality, fitting and handling

Right then, got the kit on the Wednesday two weeks ago (as promised by Venom at £349), and since done 1200 miles with the kit! (was on holiday in N.Devon)

Took me just over two 'steady' hours that night, to fit all four corners. Only problems occured was one VERY stiff nut and bolt on lower drivers side, which was a killer to get off, all the way along the thread. General tools I used & recommend (but forgotten the sizes I used now) ratchet spanner (very handy) ring spanners, HEX sockets (lessen the chances of rounding any stiff bottom nuts), WD40 (loosen nuts and coat protect damper a little), 1 metre long steel tube (to put on end of ratchet for stiff nuts!) spring compressors (for rear springs) jack, (and piece of thick wood/floorboard to sit the car wheel on once lowered to remove jack!)
I also took a few stage by stage piccies of the right side front & back replacement. ....BUT lost my £250 sony camera while on holiday with me 2gb storage card, which put a major dampener on my holiday for a few days (GUTTED!)

From the bottom of the thread material to the upper base nut (where the spring sits on) I set the front to 50mm distance, and the rear to 40mm. This sits the front nice and low, and the rear slightly raised stance. Although you may need a tiny amount of adjustment afterwards, (5-10mm or so)

My brief summary;
Fitment: No problem with the kit what-so-ever. 10/10
Quality: Weld quality good. Good coated springs, thread quality good. 8/10
Instructions: German
Ride: You now feel every bump, but after a few miles, I don't think the springs are too harsh at all, but the dampers rebound more quickly (as you'd expect) 8/10
Handling: With my family 'in tow' everywhere I've been,I've not had chance to 'rail' it yet, but its certainly improved loads. 8/10
Value: Cheapest coilover on the market, I think it has 'optimum' damper setting, so no real need to adjust them like the others have, (unless you're Touring at Donington!) 9/10
Very nice to pay the extra £50-£60 over standard ones and have the ability to adjust the height to perfection with C spanner included.

One picture saved before losing camera, sorry I haven't got any more

Oh yeah. Get one of these too. I got by without, but these probably make life a lttle easier when tightening things back up.

Here u go. Piccie of me little car yesterday evening just before the sun went in. Not superlow, but shows the height I've now set it at with absolutley no arch catching on 17's, even with people in the back. As you can see, about to start some bodywork smoothing & welded badboy bonnet  Car looks a bit higher now I've taken arches, sideskirts, and front splitter off though. Arches could easily be modified if you wanted to go lower as tyre catches at the centre of arch when lower
