  Bought a set of black alloygators for my 18 inch pirellis. Saved me on a few occassions. I think they are a good job.

No worries - I already acknowledged they're a matter of personal taste. I find tinted windows and dodgy 3rd party wheels similarly tacky but I wouldn't expect everyone else to go by my opinion - it'd be a pretty dull world if everyone thought the same.

That's what one looks like after it detaches partly on a motorway and starts lashing your (new) wing.

I had to park on the hard shoulder and rip the thing off.

That is horrendous, did it do any damage to your wing?  I think you would be better off taking your chances of kerbing them.

Through some miracle (and I suspect also due to the gator being made of a nylon compound) the initial damage on the wing looked awful. However the next morning it literally rubbed off - turns out the damage was limited to some minor scratches on the alloy from where the gator had first made a bid for freedom - annoying given they'd just been refurbished, but much better than the alternative.

I jacked the car up and ripped the rest off the day afterwards. As you said it's better risking kerbing than needing a respray....

Its not uncommon to get black wheels with a red lip but the red lip looks like a red lip. Not like some gaffer tape around the wheel.
