16v engine conversion questions...
« on: 22 August 2011, 18:30 »
hi everyone, thinking about doing this mod. i have read this sticky http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=124485.0

so just to clarify then. i can buy a 16v engine and bolt it straight in with the 8v gearbox?

what downside is there running the 8v gearbox? top end im not bothered about as i dont really intend going much over a ton at the best of times, as long as im not doing 6000rpm at 70mph!!!

if there are big downsides then i will swap to the 16v gearbox and obviously change the clutch mechanism to a hydraulic one.

what are the parts i need? new engine mounts, engine, what else?

from the sticky it mentions about a new ecu can someone explain more about this? and anything i may have missed out would be great

I take it your running a GTI 8v? I have done this conversion myself.

I seriously would not run the 8v box, they are very fragile and will no doubt break.

You need:

Engine + box
Hydro clutch setup
Cable shift setup
16v engine bay loom
ECU
Transponder + chip in key

8v box will be fine for dialy use, i swapped my old 8v box into the 16v car i had which i robbed the box for my S3 converison

the 16v car is going strong and the new owner rags it to death. its faster off the line than before.. but who knows how long it will last the way he drives

Id rather have the propper set up and run the hydro set up and ABF gearbox etc

If you are running the 8v box then you will just need the engine, engine loom, ecu and transponder box and chip if the ecu is immobilised.
I would replace the rear engine mounts and you will need to put the 8v flywheel, pressure plate and clutch on the 16v engine before fitting the 8v box.

Not that much more power though, it's a lot of effort with doing the gearbox as well for quite a small gain imo. Will the 16v be staying standard?
