I have the same sooking noise - but I think it could be normal on the golf gti???

I have checked all the breathers and vacuum hoses and they are all on good condition. My old polo used to make the same noise and a stud was sheared of the block which held the exhuast manifold and was blowing from there. It never got the greatest mpg as I think it was loosing compression. I could be wrong on this - but thats my 2 cents.

Have you checked the exhuast system?...Mines is not in the best of condition - has a 10 year old rotted back box on it.

As for the misfire - timing may be slightly out I think.

When was it last serviced? If its been a while, I'd go for this as a first port of call. Change spark plugs and leads too. Obviously check all vac hoses and breather pipes, and make sure they are all firm and intact. Get someone to rev whilst you look over, and try and pinpoint the noise. If you can see the breather pipe compressing whilst at revs, replace it. Dizzy could also be at fault for the misfire, and a few others.......

had the same issue a while ago mate! check the stiff thin pipe that runs from inlet manifold(right hand side) back to servo, mine had cracked where it meet the servo took me ages to find that out and caused the problems you are having.its bastard to get too but could be worth a look...

1.8? Check the rubber gasket between the throttle body and inlet manifold, they are prone to splitting.
