Sounds like the timing is out and it is in safe mode.

Has it had a cam belt recently

when i got th car 3 months ago i changed the cam belt first before i even drove the car on the road

Then that will be the problem, timing will be out by a tooth. Get it checked out

Set TDC and adjust the dizzy if out only a tooth or two, lot easier than taking it apart again

As everyone else has said timing is out, I had this when I bought mine, had it serviced with a new belt and revving up to 6500 now
