INSURANCE GRIEF
« on: 28 July 2011, 17:49 »
right guys, been looking for quotes with regards to putting the VR lump into my 8v gti

I have just spoken to the DVLA, asking that once i have done the conversion and i send my V5 to them to update the changes, what would be stated on my V5? which they confirmed it would say VW GOLF 2.8 VR6, so i asked when i enter my vehicle reg into an insurance site or phone them and tell them, what would come up??

A) VW GOLF 2.0 GTi 8V *modified* or

B) VW GOLF 2.8 VR6??

as i am arguing with various companies at the moment saying that i have modified the engine which i have not. i have replaced my engine with another engine out of another golf of the same year which is slightly larger. trying to get them to listen to the fact that GTi's and VR6's are pretty much the same build just different engines but they dont want to listen.....

cheapest quote i have atm is £888.95 thats an increase of £350 wtf and HIC or Adrian Flux were useless with their quotes too quoting over £1200

why are most insurance companies uselss wasters?? and anyone done what im doing? if so whats your prices? bearing in mind i am 26, 9 years license held, 7yrs ncb, no convictions, points defaults or anything

RANT OVER FOR NOW...........

The chassis number would point to a Gti 8v, so it will class as a modified vehicle. If it didn't come out of the factory as a VR6, it will not be a VR6.

That doesn't mean to say that some numpty at the DVLA hasn't told you something utterly wrong of course... My belief is if you sent that V5 back to the DVLA with the new details, it will come back as showing Golf Gti, and the engine size would be 2800cc. Nothing more than that. I think it's unlikely they'll be changing model numbers on the V5. My guess is you spoke to numpty boy.

Might be worth asking one of the guys who've modified their vehicles on here and find out what happended with their V5s just to clarify the situation.

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

The GTI and the VR are a totally different build really. It's not just the engine it's the brakes and suspension too. Basically it would become a modified vehicle which insurance companies don't like. If you want the VR power then buy a VR and pay half the cost on the insurance. Surely a no brainer

No brainer to someone who has the money to buy the VR in the first place - I don't hence buying the lump. It may be a 'modified' car however the engine is not modified in anyway, and it annoys me how insurance companies say the engine is modified when its actually the car!!

Oh well, ill be ringin some more places later, and the dvla again

All the DVLA will do is change the cc, they will not change from a GTI to VR as all you are doing is putting a bigger engine in the car.

A modification is classed as anything that is not on or in the car when it leaves the factory. A GTI did not ever have a 2.8 or 2.9 ltr engine so it is a mod. As for the cost....you can't simply drop a VR engine in the GTI as the brakes would not be strong enough and the suspension would not be suitable. You would need to change all these which would be costly really. Nowadays you can pick up a decent VR for around a grand. At least then everything is in place.
If you can't afford to buy and insure a VR then the fuel costs involved will cripple you and you should think about sticking to the GTI lump for a while. However, if you buy a decent VR and get classic insurance then this would represent a decent saving and make it worthwhile.  But, it's your money and your life your risking

the brakes will be the same as the VR6 but and most of the suspension (rates of springs etc will be diffferent due to the heavy VR lump) but I wouldnt expect an insuranace co to know that... all they see is bigger engine and more power

I agree with the just buy a VR6 and save the hassle of insurance and the time it will take to fit the engine and gearbox
