I'd always go for a rigid one. Personal preference.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I am going to put forward this cycle scheme to my bosses at work, although they are away for a couple of weeks at the moment. Does it actually cost them anything?

only if they take out a consumer credit licence, they should actually save money given the reduction in the NI payments

http://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/employers/employer-faqs

by default the scheme allows you a bike / accessories upto £1000 over that and they need a credit licence which costs money.

when you actually come to buying the bike checkout bikeradar as you'll get much better advice than on a car forum.

Take care, ive been run over three times.
Join the cycling federation and get insurance, Wear a helmet and dont ride like a knob.
Dont rush or jump lights etc, watch out for drivers who dont like bikes and grind you into the kerb.
Have proper lights and some LED flashers, look then indicate and never take chances.
Choose your route to work wisely.

If you ride with your ipod on then you deserve to learn your lesson the hard way

I ride with my iPod on quietly and I've not been run over once... Let alone 5 times!

To be run over once is unfortunate, three times looks like carelessness, but five times looks like time for an eyetest!
I've been a target for 'halfords spec' saxos for almost three years now!
