Looking for a mk 2
« on: 25 July 2011, 20:24 »
Hi all

I last posted around 3 years ago when I was looking for a mk2 GTI.  My impending marriage and lack of a garage ruined that plan, but 3 years on I am married and have a house with garage!

I have around £2k to spend, but may strecth a little for the right car, or spend less and use some cash to improve the car

A quick search on piston heads:  http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2973141.htm

There is very little info in the advert but I contacted the seller who reports:  8v, bodywork 'mint', recent respray, no paperwork (apparent house fire), no tax/mot, not been on the road for a few years but was running until a month ago, now no spark - thinks needs new dizzy cap (?), will deliver (I have no trailer), selling for £700.

I am partly looking for advice on this car but mainly asking the question is it worth taking a risk buying a car which is in good knick but may need mechanical work or is it better buying an mot'd solid runner at more of a premium?

The chap thinks it would sell for more if breaking for spares but he has no time due to pending baby arrival.

Thanks all in advance

Pete.

...as ever Pedro.  Buy on bodywork.  Plenty on buying info by using the search function.

Yeah I have heard that before.  Is the mk2 generally reasonable to fix/replace parts then?  I would be running it as a 2nd car so wouldnt be relying on it for commuting etc but would be keen not to buy something that was in the garage fortnightly and cost the earth to get back on the road.  Part of my reasoning for buying is to learn a bit more about the mechanics/maintenance of the car,  I currently have little in the way of mechanical knowledge.  Saying that I learnt alot about the electrics and mechanical failure of my last ride on mower!  what a piece of sh!t that was.

Pedro.

The MK2 is a fantasic car.  It is well built and very easy to maintain.  If you have a childhood grasp of Lego/Mechano you wont go far wrong.  Its all mechanical and not electronic. No laptops required.

Parts are readily available and cheap.  There are a few parts that are discontinued by the dealer, but are still supplied in the aftermarket.

A well sorted MK2 is a joy to own and a joy to drive.

If you only had a rust free rolling shell, you can source the parts to rebuilt a mint MK2.

So aim for a good rust free shell, with good paintwork.

you can then replace/update the mechanicals/interior as you see fit.
