Am I the only one who thinks that vwkev is the only one on here who has a vendetta against the Gtd. Everyone else can see it qualities

I'm pretty sure that if you drove a GTI for six months, then drove a GTD for 6 months, the only things you'd really notice would be the noise and how often you visited petrol stations.

I owned a Mk5 170 DSG GT before the GTI which was a fantastic car but was not quite the complete car for me which I find the GTI is. Some of this is done to a slight badge issue and some of this is down to a quest for a bit more speed. Although I would probably would say the same thing about an R compared to a GTI if I was to own one of those next.

The fuel economy was excellent on the GT. This is more relevant today seeing as the cost of fuel has risen to stupid levels in recent years. The 170 GT had bundles of mid range torque so excellent for motorway driving which is probably better suited for my daily commute in all honesty.

The MK6 GTD compares well in the looks department with the GTI especially when fitted with the charleston alloys.

So would I buy a GTD..... Yes is the answer but I wouldn't go out of my way to swap my GTI for one at this point. But when the Mk7 comes out I will certainly test drive a GTD and see how is compares to a GTI.

Andy and I debated for 30 secs who should start this thread. As I am a tad unpopular and he is much loved, he carried the mantle.
I am a petrolhead and as I don't give a stuff about fuel economy, as don't do many miles, as I don't mind visiting petrol stations where I do most of my prowling, as I rather have the smoothest and quietest engine for my fast enough shopping trolly, as I have a Diesel Mercedes, I prefer the icon which is the GTI which suits my sensibilities.
Nothing wrong with this and nothing wrong in preferring a GTD if that's what floats your boat. But you all know it is NOT a GT with an 'I'. And there is nothing wrong with a bit of snob value.

As a daily car to use now, regardless of the mileage I do, I would have a diesel over a petrol every time. Living in the sticks with an agricultural background, that's just the way we do things out here.

However, if I were buying a Mk6 in 20 years time as a fun weekend car, it would have to be a GTI for it's inconic status. I can't imagine owning a Mk2 GTD instead of my Mk2 16V
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I don't thing I'd touch either with a bargepole after 20 years of failing sensors and expensive electronic bits that have a limited shelf life.
A mk2 is an over engineered but very simple car. If you can find one that has been well cared for with all its original body panels you're on to a winner. You can replace a full engine in a mk2 for a few hundred quid. I reckon a new engine in a mk6 would cost thousands upon thousands.
A mk2s engineering is what VWs image still rests on with the fickle public suckered by slick marketing men. A mk6 is is just another throw away modern car.

what he said.....

My 25th Anni was a diesal and whilst it was a great looking car, I missed the feel of a petrol engine - they way you can rev the nutz of it right up to the redline.  In a the diesal I always felt the range of revs where the power was delivered was to short.

My mates used to wind me up all the time as well and say it's not a real GTI because it was an oil burner - this was guys that don't have any love for the GTI badge but their opinion was that if it's not a petrol then it's not a real GTI.

Yeah, but your mates aren't paying your fuel bills and if you want to go round revving the nuts off it you're obviously not going to be a Diesel driver for very long. I don't have any mates so would have nothing to worry about!

Defend your car all you like but take off the blinkers ffs, its a f**kin Diesel and its a wannabe GTI.

I'm not telling any lies, its the truth and sometimes for an owner it hurts. Suck it up.
