I still dont understand why people seem to think i have destroyed my car. Because i dont wash it?? or would that be because i drive it harder than most??

As much as you would all like to belive that the mk6 GTI is the greatest car ever... it simply isnt. Its an overpriced, poorly made, vw marketing dept's golden egg.

If you are enjoying your GTI then good on you.. im sure Mr VW is enjoying your £20k+ a whole lot more
So what's a better car for the money then Gilly , I mean pound for pound ?

the focus, civic, mazda, renault... virtually anything. you either buy into the vw b0ll0x about reliability or you dont... ask the mk1, mk2, mk3, mk4 owners about the reliability

Renault

Last year’s position 29th out of 30
Cars needing repair work 45%
Average repair cost £227
Star model Clio (’05-’09)
The humble Clio (’05-’09) turned in Renault’s best performance, with 20 cars per 100 requiring attention. Unfortunately this was a long way ahead of the rest of the range, as the next-closest car was the older Clio
(’98-’05) with 32 faults per 100 cars. The majority of models score just one out of five for reliability; electrical gremlins accounted for 43% of failures.

Not sure what you meen by the mk1 mk2 mk3 mk4 coment? If your saying there unreliable i disagree.
I have owned a mk1 since 1989 and it has been bomb proof. I was in my teens when i bought it so i drove it v.v.v.v.v.v hard, like i stole it!. Its never let me down always started first time and always just went. I spent that time of my life fixing mates fords/vauxhalls so the VW impressed me as it did what they could not. The mk1 was used as my daily driver until ~1998 and then back as my daily 4 years later for a few years. Its never needed any engine work and anything that did need attension was simply things like exhaust/brakes/tyres/suspension/clutch/paint due to age catching up with it.

Must admit though the mk6 has not impressed me at all in alot of areas. The mk6 may handle and be more powerful and be nice to drive but to me thats not all a car should be. To the point i often think of selling it and just using the money to nut and bolt rebuild the mk2 to use as my daily, with the mk2s simple engineering and mechanicals theres little to no electronics to worry about either.

The Skoda Octavia looks like sh!t, the Audi A3 Sportback looks like sh!t, the VW 'rocco looks like sh!t, the Seat Leon looks like sh!t, the Ford Focus looks like sh!t, the Alfa Gulietta looks a bit like the Vauxhall Astra which looks like sh!t, the BMW 1 Series looks worse than sh!t, the Kia's and Hyundai's look like sh!t, the Renault Megane looks like sh!t, the Fiats look like sh!t, the Citreon DSs look OK, the VW Golf GTI and its siblings look lovely, to my eyes. I think I've covered most of the family hatchbacks.
I have made the right choice. Now it's your turn Gilly.

Exactly my point - your car is a pile of sh!t, mine isn't (yet)

Your point is all GTI's are ca@p, sorry but looking up the numbers of people effected by cr@p cars helps people decide on the reliability of all the cars sold not just one car in thousands.  I feel your pain but you're wrong to say because you had a bad one they are all bad.

VW reliability is based to a certain extent on the past. Certainly the MKI and MKII era they were leagues ahead of the competition. You only have to look at how many MKII's are still toiling about on daily duty on this countries roads compared to similar aged fords, vauxhalls etc. My 2000 Polo (Touch wood) has been the most reliable and cheap to run car I have ever owned and that gets thrashed to within an inch of it's life and neglected badly, it's currently on 142K.

Modern cars in general are less reliable than older cars due to all the complicated technology. Ask any AA man and he'll tell you most stuff break down these days due to electronic/software issue, a small electrical issue on a modern car is a total ball ache to trace and repair. Add to this that most dealerships now only have 'fitters' and not actual mechanics, they struggle to resolve an issue that isn't a straight part replacement flagge dup by fault scan. Actual mechanical issues are much rarer. This applies to pretty much all brands. I think this is one of the reasons the costs of new cars are going up so much, they have to cover the future costs of warranty work.
