My new car, mk1 16v (need a bit of work)
« on: 30 June 2011, 20:24 »
i have just bought a mk1 16v cabby, all runs fine, well as far as i can tell so far, but has no MOT, so before i do that i want to tidy up a few bits before they get worse. (i have always run carb'd motors, so alot of this is very new to me)

The pipe from fuelling and air box etc rubs on cam pulley as there is no cam cover, does anyone know what cover will fit, i have an 8v one if it will, and if the engine mount gets in the way as its mk1?? (looks like all original mk2 16v stuff, with shopped mk1 airbox underneath, with no hole for breather pipe) saw someone just cat and glue a pipe onto airbox, i may do this too, unless its not a good idea??

also doesn't run 100% till its warmed up, any idea if these have a cold start system on and if so what i need to check?

Think i can deal with the rest of it, but will post any other bits as and when they happen

Cheers
Mark

you dont really need the cam belt cover, but no i dont think an 8v will fit. try and careful bend fuel pipe away from pulley or get heavy duty cable ties to secure it.

before messing with fueling sort the breather pipe to the airbox and check and renew all the vacuum lines

on mine its running a 16v metering head and airbox, iirc the mk1 airbox is longer and narrower than a 16v one, i would check that its not a mk1 metering head as i dont think this will provide enough fuel for a 16v especially above 4000rpm.
not running 100% until warm would point me at the warmup regulator, but if your trying to get a 16v wur to work correctly you need to check that the metering head is a 16v item, so that it will provide the correct pressures.
you will need a test guage to correctly diagnose running problems but it does sound like a wur issue, if it starts ok from cold then the cold start valve should be working ok, but if then its lumpy after starting then look at wur and injectors.

the wur directly controls fueling during the warm up period by allowing more fuel to the injectors, as it is heated by a bimetallic strip and heat from the engine,it will gradually close the valve within the wur and reduce the fuel to the injectors

ok cool, cheers for that. will have a look.

its not fuel pipes on the cam belt, its the big inlet pipe going into the manifold, and one of the little sensor/valve things under it!

should these clear the belt?

ahh right then i would suggest taking the intake pipe apart and see if its all fitting properly. on mine it a chrome power rohr pipe that is a bit longer and gives good clearance but does touch suspension turret. the valve thingy underneath is the overrun cutoff valve and you should be able to loosen the jubilee clip and maybe twist it away from cambelt the open end of this valve on mine is pointing towards wing.
get a picture up
it does sound like the metering head is mounted too close to engine thereby causing intake to foul
my m/head airbox is about maximum an inch from the inner wing, and yes they should clear the belt

ok had a better look today, taken the whole airbox/metering head/ pipes off of car, cleaned them up (as the breather has been spitting at it all for god knows how long, i dont know how to tell if its a 16v metering head or not, any ideas how to tell, the bottom of the airbox is a mk1 i think as no breather inlet, but i have read this is common to use mk1 bottom and fit 16v head. Also there is no vacuum hose goin to the underside of the pipe just before it goes into the manifold, there are 2 vanuum hose inlets, one is blanked the other just open, is this correct?

no one should be blanked one should have a vacuum hose to a t piece  from the t piece one goes toward over run cutoff valve and one to servo pipe take off,
there is a thread on here in the mk2 section where i have described exactly how vacuum lines should run, im only just in from work mate and cant be bothered to type it again just now, but if you get stuck or cant find thread i will do it tomorrow

no a good note my new dubpower manifold arrived today wayheyy

Ok cool, think they are right then, will have a look in the mk2 bit later when ir goes back together, any ideas on telling which metering head it is, is there an obvious difference in the 16v and 8v?

just looked up all part number on there, and its a 16v one, also have fitted a breather in the airbox, now just need to mount it somewhere so it doesnt hit the cam belt!!! any pics of how this has been done???
