But you'll need to be driving at nine or ten tenths to see any noticable performance / dynamic advantage. How often does that actually happen?
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

The mk6 GTD is not in the same class bracket as a GTI. I mean there's Saxo's that beat the GTD. It's around 1.5 secs slower than the GTI and the slouch wont even hit 140. Plus you'll look a cheap ba5tard for not buying a GTI.

One opinion...

I was in convoy with a GTD on the way to Inters this year..nothing in it performance wise at motorway speeds.

My mate also has a Mk5 170 TDI, and there is so little in it on a back road, it's all up to the driver (and the Mk5 170 TDI and Mk6 GTD are so very similar one can be compared to the other performance wise, handling wise etc)

A GTI and GTD are trading gains/losses everywhere...GTI is faster for those who live their lives 14 seconds at a time....or need the extra 15 MPH at jail type speeds...real world, backroads, dual carridgeways, motorways etc, there is little in it.
The GTI is slightly quicker evetywhere if worked...but it is a slight difference, in the real world, where the cars actually drive.

Ive been saying this for the last 18 months ,but people on here wont have it for just because its diesel , The GTD will match any gti

Good comparison HERE shows the difference.
Mk6 GTI 3dr | DSG | Tornado Red | 18" Monza 2 | LED Xenons | RNS510 | Bluetooth | Smoked LED tails | Cruise | Reversing Camera | TPMS | - now sold :(

I'd say at anything other than taking Gran to church speed, it's noticable.
At fve tenths or above, it's a gap that just gets bigger.
So basically, every day you drive it, I'd say.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Am a mk4 owner and thinking of changing to a MK6 having spoken to VW. But does the same apply to mk6's as mk4's that 2.0L's Golf GTI / GTD is slow?

I have a 1.9 at min 130 but stage 1 remap and want power and want to stick to dervs.
You've not done much research have you? Why would you think a turbo'd 210bhp car would be as slow as a 115bhp normally aspirated barge with 1970s rear suspension and the steering responses of the Ark Royal?
The mk6 (and mk5) may weigh a bit, but I Ess_three has hit the nail on the head with the dynamics side of it.
GTI or GTD? Only you can decide that. The GTI needs a remap really as it's just a tad too refined. It's fast enough as standard but doesn't give you a kick.
The GTD is not like the old PD 1.9 engines. It sounds less Diesel like, revs much more smoothly and doesn't have that 8v kick in the back.

If I were to wind the clock back to when I bought mine, this time round I'd go for the GTD with a remap.
Well if I'm honest I probably wouldn't go for either but I won't harp on about that again!! Lets just say it'd be the same engine and chassis with a different shell.

I think murder is a bit strong. On bragging rights, the GTD will be quicker, but in real terms on public roads, there will be bugger all difference. The advantage that the GTD will have over the Mk4 is it is a far nicer place to sit in and makes even the very best Mk4 seem like a very old car.

I was referring to the package..power, traction, cornering, braking etc...the Mk6 is so far ahead of the abysmal Mk4 is's scarcely believable they were only one generation apart (The Mk6 is only a tweaked Mk5 after all).

You show both a twisty, challenging back road...and the Mk4 won't see which way the Mk6 goes.
The difference is very real...Mk4 TDI to Mk6 GTD (or Mk5 170 TDI for that matter).

Agree with Ess_Three

I've moved from a fairly heavily modified MK4 TDI 130 to to an Audi A3 S Line (basically a posh MK5 ) and the difference between the two is night and day

This was evident from the first time I took the Audi out on one of my favourite B Roads in appalling conditions.  I was travelling at speeds the Golf could only dream of in the dry and I wasn't even pushing it due to the conditions.  The chassis is leaps and bounds ahead of the MK4 and so it should be as it's a car designed in the 21st century
