mk2 engine transplant which ones best?
« on: 25 June 2011, 15:50 »
i have a mk2 8v, its been resprayed silver polybushes interior is mint the only one thing im not happy with is the lack of speed. i want an engine that can give 170+bhp with a few mods i.e rebore,cams,ported/polished head. i will be doin/attemting to change the engine myself, so im thinkin a 1.8t might be a bit to much to take on. so thinkin maybe a tuned mk2 16v engine or an abf but not sure these can give me the power i want. i want 0-60 in high 6secs idealy. i cant find any reference to the amount of power a mk2 needs to get that kinda speed as no one seems to talk about it. i dont want to spend the time and money on the engine and not have the result i want. can anyone give me some advice on this? and which engine is best for a brave but novice diy mechanic to attemp lol.

16abf turbo'd? light weight flywheel, bored out, cammed out, ported & polished & crossflowed (if possible)
or you can try a vr & turbo that, same as above realy. correct me if im wrong
abf will be easier to than the vr as the vr is chain driven, but if you get a vr then change the chains (you mostly will do that wont you?)

thought about a vr but they are big heavy lumps, would prefer a nice lil revvy 16v i dont have buckets of money to spend so tuboin either of them isnt really an option, if i have to go for a 1.8turbo to get the performance i want i'll have to do that.

If you use the search function in the mk2 section you should find answers to any and all questions.

It can be a straight forward conversion but there are options as to what you change etc. Have a read through some search results, here's one for starters, from the mk2 maintenance section:

how about a 2.0 8v on carbs? or even 2.0 16v on carbs or even TBs, would get you close to the 150+ish.

0-60 time will all depend on how you can get the power down at the front wheels

see your other thread, an ABF is likely the best bet for you. They have 150 bhp as standard, and if you put there factory management system in you should easily see around 170 with a 4 branch exhaust manifold and a remap to suit. Very good power to wallet ratio.

I'd say you'd get about 160bhp, only 10hp out!
