The prices of new GTI's have rocketed now and the difference is larger. price wasn't a factor when I made the choice, size and doors was.
The criticisms levelled at the Polo were basically that the suspension isn't taut enough and that the steering is light , with not enough feedback ie. not GTI enough.
Curing the suspension won't cost me too much and that should help with the steering feel/feedback too. Once the car is remapped, believe me it will be a little belter.
I think our SWMBOs are related Hurdy. I had exactly the same comment about the Golf being too big and powerful with my wife, especially since the remap. So, I went shopping for a Polo and naturally started at the GTI.

If you're putting elderly parents in the back, there isn't much space and it's not very comfortable on trips of any distance if you're in the back seat. This from someone who lives in the city and has had a Polo and has had that complaint. That said, they are fun cars and great for city driving.
@Asker - I'm sure you've seen the WRC Polo R that pushes out 300bhp. Now that's a hair dresser car!
