I really wanted to like the polo GTI when we were looking for a second car but I don't understand the polo GTI standard spec theres some odd things missing that imo should be standard not options. When i spec'ed one up it worked out more expensive than my golf was for a similar spec and as the polo is not getting very good write ups from evo and such like i decided against it for the price.

The prices of new GTI's have rocketed now and the difference is larger. price wasn't a factor when I made the choice, size and doors was.
The criticisms levelled at the Polo were basically that the suspension isn't taut enough and that the steering is light , with not enough feedback ie. not GTI enough.
Curing the suspension won't cost me too much and that should help with the steering feel/feedback too. Once the car is remapped, believe me it will be a little belter.

I think our SWMBOs are related Hurdy. I had exactly the same comment about the Golf being too big and powerful with my wife, especially since the remap. So, I went shopping for a Polo and naturally started at the GTI.  If you're putting elderly parents in the back, there isn't much space and it's not very comfortable on trips of any distance if you're in the back seat. This from someone who lives in the city and has had a Polo and has had that complaint. That said, they are fun cars and great for city driving.

@Asker - I'm sure you've seen the WRC Polo R that pushes out 300bhp. Now that's a hair dresser car!

@AGB: The MIL is 5ft tall and the FIL is 5ft 2", so I could buy a shoebox and they would fit (with a little encouragement! )

Polo GTI is a good choice A more cohesive design than the inevitable compromise of a facelifted Mk5, lighter and with 220bhp would be a great car. Probably as close to a Mk2 as you can get these days.

Do they have torsion beam rear axle?

Changing the subject a little bit - The dealer has confirmed RVC is not available. I'll leave it for a little DIY later this year as it seems it can be retrofitted

There are some R"s knocking around in showrooms , ive seen a few 

They're still £30k for a used one, which is far too much money imo (For me anyway)

Absolutely it's too much money, it's got a 2.0 engine for god's sake! Unbelievable, the VW scene tax, it really is.
