Valve spring compressor help!!
« on: 02 June 2011, 20:38 »
Hi all
I'm gonna be replacing my valve stem seals soon, jut ordering a headset, anything else i need?
Do I need a particular spring compressor or will a generic one do?
Anything else i should replace whilst I'm in there?
Cheers

Yes any spring compressor will do the job really, you also need new head bolts.

Ok, head bolts aswell
Cambelt is only a 1000 miles old sonthats fine...
Could you just confirm the method of replacin the stem seals please Wayne?
Reading the Haynes and trying to get my head round it. I need some grind paste and a grinding tool?

You will not need grinding paste, compress the springs and then remove the top collets, then remove the spring and top plate, you will then see the stem seal, remove and replace with new, you should get in the kit a small piece of plastic to fit down over the top of the valve when fitting the new one so it does not snag on the seal.

The reassemble as required.

You would only need grinding paste if you remove the valves.

I see!
The Haynes is a bit vague unless you pull the valve out!
Do i need to take the head off still? I thought unless you have a compressor
You have to rip the head off?
Thanks though mate, trying to get my head round it before i go any further!
Got the cam cover off finally today after the stuck bolt!

Well you can do them with compressed air and leaving the head on but if your not sure then remove the head.

I would remove the head and clean it up. The paste is so the valves makes a good seal.
Always worth getting done when rebuilding.

Ok, will just get the head off and find a better guide than Haynes because it doesn't tell ya unless ya remove the valve :(
Any ideas where to get one?

Halfords or any good motor factors will sell you the kit.
The only thing i remember is the tool i had wouldn't work on 16v engines, but fine on 8v.
Do you need an uprated tool for 16v Wayne? or was mine just sh!t
