Cleaning seats? Best product?
« on: 01 June 2011, 10:12 »
Recently purchased a new golf and smells a bit smokey inside so wanted to try and clean the seats? Is this possible with like a shampoo etc. If so which one is best? Cheers

a good foaming active upholstery cleaner, for yrs now ive used something called auto groom by ambersil, not the best product on the market, but its always done the job well

simply spray on, leave for a few minutes, then wash off with warm water

a wet vac will be best as the smells will be much deeper than a spray and wipe will reach. they will be masked but will come back.

I strip them down and put the fabric in the washing machine on a cool cycle.
Done several sets now and they always come up looking new.

I reckon your headliner will be where most of the smell will be eminating from, i'd consider doing that too.

My latest one had sat for at least 8 months unused with both ashtrays full of stale cigarettes when I bought it.

I've done:

1) Wiped/Scrubbed everything (everything!) with vinegar and a cloth/scrubbing brush.
1.5) Left bowls of vinegar out in the car overnight which is meant to draw in the smells.

- This led to a car that smelt of stale smoke and vinegar -

2) Bought an Odour Bomb and used it.

- I think since mine is a non-A/C car I shouldn't have had the blower on, all that happened was the odour bomb splatterd over the carpet it was sitting on, drenching a 15-20cm radius of carpet.

3) Bought a gel air freshener.

- Seems to be conquering the smell at last ...or masking it-

I've been taking up the carpets etc for working on the floor, so had fresh air going through the car as well and little by little it seems to be fading.

I read on the internet that one good tactic is to run the heater on at full heat, apparently this gets rid of smells very effectively. Not been able to try it as don't have enough petrol to run the engine long enough to get hot and can't afford to put any more in.

Chief :)

autosmart have the theory that the smell of the smoke is held within your air con/climate control system/vents...

I recently had my car valeted while on holiday (you may of read in another post topic). I wasn't getting it done to get rid of a smell, but it has defo come back smelling brand new. I was looking for prices for an 'interior shampoo' from a professional valet company and the website were chucking up prices of about £40...

Hope you get rid of the smell one way or another!
