My latest one had sat for at least 8 months unused with both ashtrays full of stale cigarettes when I bought it.
I've done:
1) Wiped/Scrubbed everything (everything!) with vinegar and a cloth/scrubbing brush.
1.5) Left bowls of vinegar out in the car overnight which is meant to draw in the smells.
- This led to a car that smelt of stale smoke and vinegar -
2) Bought an Odour Bomb and used it.
- I think since mine is a non-A/C car I shouldn't have had the blower on, all that happened was the odour bomb splatterd over the carpet it was sitting on, drenching a 15-20cm radius of carpet.
3) Bought a gel air freshener.
- Seems to be conquering the smell at last ...or masking it-
I've been taking up the carpets etc for working on the floor, so had fresh air going through the car as well and little by little it seems to be fading.
I read on the internet that one good tactic is to run the heater on at full heat, apparently this gets rid of smells very effectively. Not been able to try it as don't have enough petrol to run the engine long enough to get hot and can't afford to put any more in.
