Ideally you want to buy a donor car with the engine still attached. That way you can see the engine running and give it a good inspection rather than taking a big gamble and possibly ending up with a smoking engine or one damaged upon removal.

Yep, it is a much better idea, as you can confirm what condition the engine is in before fitting.
