steering wheel spline addaptor question?

Hi my golf came with a halfords special of a steering wheel fitted and i wanted to change it back to standard (i got one from the brakers) it was a later steering wheel so had a larger spline i have managed to get the spline addaptor but now i have fitted it im left with a gap between the rear of the steering wheel and the cowling as if the steering wheel is not pushed on far enough? has anyone else had this problem or do i need to change anything else to get it to fit propaly?

Are you fitting it to an early car?

Presume you have tightened the nut right up to push wheel on as far as it will go?

Yes I was trying to fit it to an early car but I have given up now lol. When I took the old steering wheel off there was a spring that Is held on with a small metal ring when I try to fit the new steering wheel the spring can't compress enough so stops the new wheel from fitting??
