Smoothed Bay

Well some of you may know im going for a smoothed bay on my mk2.. Ive seen a few bays but nothing with close or detailed pictures or any info on the best route to make a smoothed bay...

So im asking all you mk2 lovers can you post any pictures you have of smoothed or partially smoother mk2 golf bays.. with or without engine.. and any info you have on smoothed bays and the best way to tackle them..

I have done a few to different levels.  The red one was just the main holes and battery tray etc and the other was an Ibiza which i had to fabricate the whole bay as it is normally just a skeleton!  Whatever lengths you go to it will take ages  :grin:  There is a fair amount of flex within the engine bay so welding is a must.

That was really hard to do, but mostly because it was like this before:



But mk2's are half done for you! I would get some filler with a bit of flex in it.. such as this

If you need to put a fair bit in, mix it with normal fibreglass filler for strength.

Imo the most time consuming part is getting all the old rubber sealant off, so a good blowtorch is a must!  When doing the Ibiza bay I just made a template from card and tried to make it all from as little pieces as possible.  Welding a little at a time saves a lot of warping of the metal and a lot more filler and effort later on.  I will try and dig up an old build thread of a nice bay.

Well luckily i have already removed all the dodgey putty type stuff VW used when making the car..

I am thinking of boxing in the chassis legs.. and then just trying to smooth what else i can within my limits  :smiley:

If you could dig some info up that would be great mate  :smiley:

Do you mean the seam sealer? which has kept your car from falling to pieces for at east 20 years? :laugh:

I didnt mean it was bad stuff all i mean was VW didnt apply it neatly and its a right b!tch to remove lol

They applied it neatly on type 1,2 and 3s...they rotted
