Oh I know all about worn tooling. I used to drive minis!

The front subframe on my wifes 1996 mini had a total of 17 shims in it to get to line up straight and true FROM THE FACTORY! Had a nightmare fitting that thing back in after an engine swap I can tell you.

Nearly 3 years ago, although I bought 2 of the last 3 Drivers side ones last July-one used on my car after a stupid woman drove through a red light into me!

Thom,

Nice to see you have picked up my mantle of being a "VAG Parts Snob".

When I bought my car and took it to a body shop the first thing the guy said that wing is a patten one... To me at the time I didn't know any better til he pointed out a number of things that are wrong with them...

The panels don't fit like your pictures without a massive amount of work - which most body shops won't do (My son had a patten one fitted as VW had sold out at the time - and it was shocking do he took it back and it came back better but not brilliant).

It's not just the swage lines that show up on patten wings its around the front too - Patten ones just don't have the sharp angles or the nicely rolled finish where the fold over... I know its anal but I did notice a massive difference between what was fitted when I bought the car to what it has on now.

I know to some peeps it makes not one bit of difference but for a few quid - to me the anal one it don't seem worth wasting the money on patten parts, unless there is no choice...

And to think I have been slagged off by certain peeps on here for sticking to my OEM parts that are sprinkled with "VW Fairy Dust" - I don't see them making much noise on this thread....

For ME OEM all the way (Well Most of the time!!)

If it's reasonable price then OEM all the way. But if there is something that does job just as well and is half the price then there is no point in spending money for the sake of it.

I've forked out for OEM waterpump tensioner etc from the dealer. Having said that, my local VW parts guy is a total c0ckhead and has the attitude of why don't you buy a new Golf?

Do get pissed off with people jacking up the prices and making people who don't make a lot of money struggle to get parts for the old vw's.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.
