You probably bought the car at a discounted price. £200 is a miserable extra amount, being less than 1% of the total cost of the car. I certainly would not consider playing poker with them as Jim suggests. The car is a very sort after product and they could easily sell it on for more.
For your own sanity and to maintain this to be a joyful occasion, I would tend to pay up and start enjoying your purchase. Sh!t happens, but this is a storm in a tea cup.
Collect the car ASAP and be content.

I've changed my mind, I agree with the above.

However annoying lifes to short to be without your nice new GTI. But screw them down as much as you can with regards to some cash back and a free service or something.

So go for it. I'm sure you won't be disapointed!

VW dealers have a strictly allocated supply of GTI/GTDs.Typically 1 a month for a main dealer.

Not sure how brokers get hold of them but its bound to lead to problems and broken promises.

Dealers are waiting 5/6 months or so, brokers must be nearer 7/8 months??

Whoever you bought the car through, YOU must have a contract of sale agreement with the price on somewhere!

It should clearly state the price you agreed on for the car and will either say "+VAT" or "inc. VAT"

If you have a total cost including the VAT then that is the contract and the dealer/broker should have to swallow the extra cost of the difference in VAT.

If the broker refuses to honour the agreement, then they would be in breach of agreement, which could lead to a whole world of unpleasantness. Not a road to go down lightly.

If you have a full written contract of sale with the full price inc. VAT then speak to the broker and say you don't expect to pay the difference, but would be open to alternatives (like has already been mentioned - free servicing, lifeshine, GAP etc) and resolve the issue amicably.

Thanks for the input guys, I think for the short while I've been on the forum I've had better responses than any other forums.

To update you on the deal I've accepted a higher cashback amount based on the point that I put up with a 1.2 golf rental for 5 months although its obviously cost VW for the rental I saved them on the difference of putting me in a higher spec car.. As the broker pointed out in the agreement of the rental is should have been a like for like.

Pick up is wednesday, I've told them not to wash it and I've told them not to drill any holes in the bumpers for the reg plates.

Not sure how brokers get hold of them but its bound to lead to problems and broken promises.

Brokers generally use a dealership's fleet department, which I'll assume means that VW have different allocation rules and prices for business purchases. That sort of makes sense really as Ford, GM and Peugeot discount heavily to fleet buyers so VW have to be at least a little competetive whilst still trying to remain VW-like by restricting supply enough to bolster used car prices and trying to keep used cars under the VW dealership umbrella (thus much of the finance comes via Milton Keynes rather than third parties).

Something like that anyway.

I have a funny feeling i know what broker this is as i had the same issues a year previous and there a nightmare.

They need to contact VW and get the car logged as been part of the discount sceem that protected the VAT. The dealer has to do this on the brokers request. The dealer with it been a fleet buy and so VATs normally not an issue has problably not logged the car as such and probably cannot bother there ass to do so.

all very annoying and I would also be v unhappy with the broker/dealer here, i'm also v surprised that they gave you assurances that the car would be delivered in November from a sept order given the the waiting times (a cancelled order?), I ordered in october 2010 and due to get my hands on it in next few weeks! thats nearly 8months!

i also went with a broker but once ordered i was then dealing with the dealer fleet team direct, had the VW order form with their t&cs, cost incl vat, discounts etc , you should have had this? if not then very odd.

also the dealer further discounted the price by 2.5% to absorb the vat increase so i will still end up paying 20% but the discount has absorbed it.

so initially down about 600-700 quid , they are offering £200 but also push hard for the £250 service pack to be thrown in as this will offset them stealer servicing charges with any luck! that would be a good outcome, but maybe something else, GAP etc,

if not i'd just take it on the chin as you will be 400 quid down or so and never use this broker/dealer again as seem clueless not to get this sorted for you, hope you got at least 8% discount using this broker!

taff, 8%.... that was the first offer from the broker ;)

as any businessman will tell you.... "never accept the first offer"

i think because i got such a good deal they just couldn't reduce it further.. which ok is never true, but the cash back offer they came back with i'm happy with.

trouble with me is that if i was doing this in person i get wound up... and would have done a vinnie in lockstock with the dealer!
