would you pay the extra?
« on: 06 May 2011, 01:57 »
ok so heres the short story..

ordered a gti in Sept'10 and was told delivery would be roughly November..., in december'10 they gave me a 1.2 golf that was suppose to be a like for like as a loan until mine arrived..

anyways today i got a call from my broker..

your car will be ready for pick up on wednesday... BUT

due to the VAT change the price has gone up....

my broker knowing that i'm not one to be messed about spoke to them about it the supplier has offered £200 cash back...

ive sent an email to the broker regarding my thoughts and not to insult me with petty 'gestures of goodwill' and after waiting around for 8+ months and given a 1.2 with wheel trims to drive around in... i maybe calm about it all but im no push over..

now i am aware of that VAT is paid on the date of purchase and not the order.. etc etc.. but as the car was 'suppose' to arrive november (like that was ever going to happen) and thus taking 3x the amount of time for delivery and with no customer service inbetween with NO updates and when i did chase the order all i got was "no idea of build or delivery date"

soooo... what would you do?

ive said if i don't have a reply before the end of friday (today) then i will contact VW UK regarding this and will not accept the car until they have replied.

also to add, in december i wasn't told the price would be adjusted for vat increase..

talk about ruining the whole excitement for picking up the car :(

I'd tell them to 4+3. The full price should be declared on the order form against which you paid your deposit. If there are any riders or terms and conditions, they should be on this paperwork. Is the vehicle UK stock though? I'd ensure it is if you involve VW UK.

4+3?

the order was with a broker who purchases from uk dealers... and a standard invoice which i just signed.. no terms and conditions between me and the broker. i suppose its between the broker and dealer where the terms are.. usually buying from a dealer u would get the t&c's on the back of the order.

i understand its either a haggle for them to give a further 'gesture of goodwill' or walk away.. i've waited 8+ though.. and tbh even with the spec on the car its actually cheaper than a basic model as the broker lives across the road and known him a long time.

i suppose im miffed at the fact they spring it on me a week before accepting delivery..

4+3= ''xxxx''+''off''    Nice bit of algebra there.

Difficult one that. It's easy to sit here at great distance and give you knee jerk advice but I guess VAT is VAT and it has to be paid.
As the broker is local to you and an aquaintance, it may not be a nice idea to completely hack him off but you could also look upon it as he's a local businessman who has a reputation to uphold and he therefore needs happy customers.
Judging by the tone of your replies to him thus far the relationship is going to sour anyway!
Someone has got to pay the 2.5% as the taxman doesn't do negotiations.

You've got a car to run about in; was it supplied by the dealer or the broker? Does the broker use a local dealer?
How much deposit do you stand to lose if you walk?
If you walk, what sort of price do you reckon you can get another GTI for? I'll guess that as well as the VAT increase VW will have done a sneaky price increase somewhere too!

This is quite an interesting story and I hope you keep us informed of how you get on.

Like you say, it really takes the pleasure out of the purchase of a new car when stuff like this happens.

Lol random. Its not sour between us, it's just a shame it's come to this and I think the dealer hasn"t kept him informed with the build and so was unable to inform me. The bitterness if you will isn't aimed towards him just the dealer.

I'm about to give him a call shortly anyways. Will let you know.

I can get the same deal on any car, some brands more discount than others but at the time of ordering a gti there were none for sale and those that were, had 10k on the clocks and more money than I'm paying for my new one.. So made sense to wait I guess... Oh well lol

4=3 = f*** o** if you're in polite company.

If you've waited this long, they're probably relying on you caving in.

It's a tough one this, we spoke earlier in the year about it and a few people got VW to take the hit on the VAT.  As we are in May now I think there is little to no chance of getting them to drop the VAT increase.

If you're any good at poker, try the bluff and ask them to give you the process to pull out of the sale etc.

If it were me, I think I'd pay the money but get a three year service deal thrown in or something similar.

Good luck.

You probably bought the car at a discounted price. £200 is a miserable extra amount, being less than 1% of the total cost of the car. I certainly would not consider playing poker with them as Jim suggests. The car is a very sort after product and they could easily sell it on for more.
For your own sanity and to maintain this to be a joyful occasion, I would tend to pay up and start enjoying your purchase. Sh!t happens, but this is a storm in a tea cup.
Collect the car ASAP and be content.

I`d be tempted to agree with am1w.
You`ve waited ages, its maybe a couple of hundred quid more after the £200 extra discount?

Dont let it spoil the joy of getting the new car - by all means try to get some extras like the service package (not the crappy paint protection stuff though) - but I think I`d shrug it off and get on with enjoying the car.

Just my 2p.
