Service Advice

Hi Guys,

Just about to get the golf running, however it has not been started for nearly 2 years.

I have changed the brakes hoses, ball joints, and a few other bobs.

Advice I need is -

Front brake discs - I am having issues finding out what size the fronty discs are. Dingbro/Euro Parts has advised of 2 different sets - 256mm and 288mm. Any idea on rough prices?

Oil - Any recommendation on what oil and what number best to use. It is a 97 2.0 8v gti.

Spark plugs - Was going to just go for the bosch, however I ahve used NGK in the past. Any recomendations?

Any thing else I havnt covered - the car has been started in 2 years - I am going to change the oil. fuel , air and pollen filters too.

Any advice would be apprciated.

288mm front disks 256mm for the rear.

ngk spark plugs are ok i use them np.

15/40 semi oil

Eurocarparts are quoting £40+ for a brake disc? - is this correct? Can anyone double check.

Is it best to also renew the dizzy cap and rotar arm - or do you think I be ok with the existing. They look in ok nick.

Any gains/pros to using the HT leads. The golf is standard and will be kept standard except from a cat back system and k/n airfilter.

Ordered the service stuff from euro parts with the discount code - got £25 discount

Only that the cheap stuff is cheap for a reason.  I went through about 5 sets on the wife's Ford Fusion, before getting geninue Ford ones.  The cheap ones are rubbish and not worth it.

Gsf ones will be fine as they use the same suppliers as VW.

I have never used cheap leads before......What can cheap leads cause the car to run like....Could they alter performance and MPG?


Also WadGTI    If you are ever near Milton Keynes I have just under 5 litres of 10/40 semi/synth you can have as I have just got 5 litres of 5/40 fully synth so dont need the 10/40.....Will save you £20 odd quid
