Speakers for a mk2 dash - recommendations?
« on: 15 April 2011, 11:31 »
Currently driving my gf's Lupo and I've found the speakers are so much better in it than in my Golf. This needs addressing

While for a start the Lupo has bigger speakers in the doors, I can't afford Audioscape pods for the Golf so the standard 5" speakers will have to suffice. Currently have these in the front: http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/infinity-reference-5032i.html and some cruddy JBL's in the back, all running off of an Alpine headunit. I haven't touched the speakers in the dash yet (tweeters?) so looking for recommendations as to what would be a reasonable buy?

As you can probably tell I know nothing about car audio so please stick with me

Cheers

Try component speakers (mid/woofer with a crossover and tweeters). That way the signal is split from the headunit to the speakers.  It would mean replacing your current Infinity's.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Thanks for the reply.

I'd rather not replace the Infinity's if I'm honest as they aren't that old. Reasonable budget in mind, nothing super expensive, just good all rounders

Forgive me if I'm being a little slow, but what have you actually posted for?
If you aren't prepared to even look at changing the front speakers you really aren't going to achieve much...

Sorry, as I say audio isn't my fortay!

I'm after recommendations for dash speakers really. Are the Infinitys really that bad then? I bought them on advice from here a few months back but will replace them if necessary. Looking to spend around £60-100.

Dash speakers aren't really a speaker type, more of a location.

The infinities are co-ax. They have a built in tweeter (which you can see in the middle of the cone). That's a tiny speaker attached to the big one. Then you have the main 5inch one. There'll be an inbuilt crossover set to make sure the little speaker (tweeter) receives freqs higher up the range and the bigger speaker (mid) receives a lower range.

Components, as mentioned above, have the tweeter and mid seperate along with a seperate crossover allowing you to install the speakers in seperate locations. For instance generally a tweeter works best on the a pillar as far forward as possible whilct the mid works well in the doors.

Allowing the speakers to be mounted in different locations allows for greater control of the sound they produce so you can tailor the sound to how you like it.

They're not that bad but not going to give you as good a sound as a set of components. Although buying a set of comps and throwing them in there probably aren't going to sound much better tbh.

I'm not sure of mk2s but you want the woofer to be installed on as solid mounting as possible. MDF usually

If I were you I'd look at experimenting with the ones you've got. Look at moving the speakers about to see if you can get them to sound any better. Try the doors for instance. Try making an mdf baffle for them to increase midbass response.
