22mm master cylinder help
« on: 20 March 2005, 13:16 »
i have an 8v 90 spec (1992) so that must mean it has the 20mm master cylinder, can i fit the 22m 16v item and keep my standard size brakes cos i can just do those at a later date. will it make a difference to my braking? and do i just change the master cylinder of the vacuum servo thing aswell?

also if my car is a last of the line8v will 16v calipers fit on or do i still need to change hubs etc? can someone explain cos i dont wanna but bits i dont need!

I think the 22mm master will fit on OK, the pedal will need a harder press to get the same braking force, but the pedal travel will be less. Use a bigger servo to lessen the pedal effort.
If your brake calipers are bolted on, the 16v ones will fit straight on.

The 22.5mm master cylinder fits straight on.Not 100% on the calipers and carriers.

should be if your carriers are bolted on then the 16v calipers are a straight swap. otherwise you need 16v hubs and carriers

i had a thought i looked on etka and the brake master cylinder has loads of different part numbers but 8v's had 20mm and 16v's had 22mm so thats fine we knew that but i looked up the servo and the same part number is listed as fitting pb and kr engines (8v and 16v) also says it is a nine inch servo?!? which seems to be the biggest one you can get. think is what i will do i check the part number on mine and marks car 8v and 16v respectively see if they match. i will fit the 22mm item and see what it does.

do i have to uprate my calipers tho staight away cos the 16v ones i want are still on marks car! and do bigger discs? fit 16v calipers becasue the calipers are designed differently to the 8v ones or is it because they physically mount further away from the hub?

sorry guys im a bit confused and dont really wanna have to buy bits i dont need or break the brake system open more than once

also any pointers for rebuilding calipers?

its nothing to do about whether your calipers bolt on or not. its whether the caliper carriers are bolted to the hub or not

if the carriers are a fixed part of the hub then you need 16v hubs and 16v carriers

i suspect you will need 16v hubs, carriers, calipers and 256mm discs

right after some digging on etka it appears i have the biggest size brake servo available (the 229mm one) seems the same one was fitted to 16 and 8v so thats ok im just gonna change the master cylinder cos after comapring part numbers i do only have the 20mm. so im gonna fit 16v calipers etc 22mm master cylinder and braided cables.   cos the ability to go fast comes from the ability to slow down quickly...........

I had an F reg 8v,i fitted 16v master cylinder,256 grooved/drilled disc's with hubs and the larger ball joint.(i think all the hubs are the same 89/90 on).A good set of fast road pads all round.Mk3 rear calipers(larger bore piston).Don`t bother with drilled/grooved disc's on the back, you don`t need them.Braided hoses allround.Check the compensator, make sure it moves freely,WD40 will loosen it up.Make sure the brake pipes are OK,front to back pipes, compensator to axle, across rear axle, all have a tendency to go rotton. Then use a good brake fluid to bleed the whole system and you will have brakes you wish you had always had.
