Glowing Turbo

A friend of mine has just text me asking if a turbo glowing red after a short but spirited drive is normal,any ideas?

My mates old tuned up escort rs turbo used to glow red :wink:

1.8T AGU 203bhp & 233lb/ft Rtech stage 1 custom remap,18"dezentz rims,lowered 40mm shocks n springs,whiteline 24mm adj rear arb,lcr axle bushes,polybushed arb,modified front bumper & valences,depo projector headlights,delocked,wrapped interior&bora gear knob,forge boost & coolant hoses,forge tip,forge 007p,samco vac hoses,simota aeroform cai,saiko michi catch can,deleted pcv system,r32 dogbone,miltek lg bore down pipe & sports cat/non res anni style system.

yea its normal, my k03s exhaust housing glows red hot after a spirited drive. Have to remember the turbo provides back pressure to the exhaust gases from the engine which are more like constant flames than the name exhaust gases implies.
One reason not to switch off the engine straight away and to let the engine cool down after a hard run.

Hmm It could be either running very lean or it's being starved of oil?  :undecided:

And if fluctuating/surging boost is present,would it still be normal?

That's a point you must be really going for it, or as mentioned it might be leaning out. I remember my stage 1 running red hot when I go cruising and when I went for dyno sessions and had the fuelling monitored it showed I was running a little rich as hoped, so it does happen.
