Hmm, interesting.
Well, I don't know your income and potential income in a few years time when you go off into the world and live on your own, so I can only give a sweeping statement.
What do your parents think of this idea? Do you have a load of money stashed away that will be used as a house deposit? You will literally bleed money when you buy your own place, so all I can suggest is that you think things through and discuss things with those involved with supporting you. The thick end of £30k is a lot to shell out if you are suddenly going to need a big deposit on a house in a couple of years time.
As for optional extras, none are essential, just go with the best deal. Most upgrades can be retro fitted if you suddenly require them apart from ACC. Being as you're 21 you won't need ACC. I haven't got it and don't miss it and I'm double your age and running on 19'' wheels. The ride is not bad for a sporty car.

Thanks, this helps a lot. A Polo GTI it is!

No I really mean it, that was a bit of a wake up call. I really do love the Golf GTi (all through the ranges, except maybe the MkIII...). But realistically I have already told myself I need to start putting money away for a house (no, I do not have any money stashed away). Perhaps this dream can be realised in a few years, when the mark 7/8 is out?

Thanks all.

P.S Realistically, what about a new Polo GTi? (please don't ban me)

If its a brand new Polo GTI you're thinking of buying then these are fairly expensive as well imo at around the £20,000

How about a new Seat Ibiza Cupra....... You can buy a new DSG version for around £17,500? ( not that I've been looking of course )

I think its a nice looking car tbo ( and its within the VW group of course )..... but what do I know  :undecided:

You're welcome. You can call me Dad if you like

The Polo GTI is an excellent choice, significantly cheaper to buy than a Golf GTI, significantly cheaper to run, nearly as quick and looks just as good. It's pretty expensive new (as are all desireable VWs) but there are a few dealers out there with demos which are only a few months old, have low mileage and nearly all the warranty remaining for a couple of grand under list price. Again, don't get  too hung up on the options as most things can be retro fitted and the CAN BUS stuff is based on the slightly older VWs from what I understand meaning things won't be such a nightmare to code in (LED bulbs etc).
As Martin suggested above, the Ibiza Cupra is a comparative bargain, looks just as good (especially in Speed Blue) and shares nearly all of the mechanicals but looks a bit more low budget inside in places. If you're planning on re-mapping the Cupra to 210 BHP then just plump for an FR which looks just as good again and will re-map to exactly the same figure but is significantly cheaper again.
Then there is the Fabia vRS. Again, same mechanicals, similar interior quality to the Ibiza and cheaper again, especially if you can get in quickly on the VAT free deals. In fact there were a few brokers very recently knocking them out for £14,000 brand new!!! BARGAIN! Those deals could still be there.

Heres a picture of my old Ibiza Cupra which I brought brand new in 2002 for £13,000. It was a great car for the money and pretty quick.

I will be taking ownership of my new demo tomorrow which is a new polo gti.......... In wait for it shadow blue looks a right classy pocket rocket

Personally if you are going to spend close to £20k on a polo I would sooner spend that on a nice used mk6 gti then retro trick it out.

Nice Ibiza Cupra Martin. I still meet up with a few Cupra guys from time to time (were you ever on SeatCupra.net?). One of the guys has a black mk3 Cupra like your old one, but it's running stage 2 REVO and it is a rocketship!

I'd be inderested to hear your thoughts on the Polo GTI when it arrives Lee. I asked my local (Inchcape) dealer twice if they have ordered in a Polo GTI. Both times they said no and they weren't interested in bringing a demo in either. They just said there wasn't enough demand. Fair comment.
I quite fancy one but don't think the boot would be big enough. Shame really as I could retire my ancient Ibiza Cupra, chop in my mk6 and just run one car; could save ££££s!!!

Well just be out for a blast in my new polo gti demo and what a shock, blistering pace from the little engine but I guess it should be expected with 180ps. Awesome combination with the dsg gearbox so easy to drive fast and a pleasure to just potter around in. Seats extremely comfortable and love the piano black on the dash. Over the moon with it and love it is shadow blue. Sound from the exhaust is quite tasteful and throaty. The xds works on over time on full throttle and does torque steer a bit when pushed. Having driven a few cooper s' recently I would say feels like a cooper s just a lot more comfortable and more importantly liveable. Boot is very small though : ( ah can't have it all
