Using optimax will NOT stop tappets from making a noise, what your experiencing is pinking as Rich said. Not sure how much the tappets are to buy , but the job is a fairly straightforward one.

I think they are around ?6.50 ea from GSF but having now been converted I would try Eurocarparts. Probably about the same price and better quality.

I would be inclined to go to VW as well, NO point doing the job and finding the new ones are dodgy.

C&R had a warning in one of the mags about cheap japanese followers that rattle more than the ones they replaced.

I had noisy tappit so brought some STP treatment for old engines. It was some really thick oil stuff but sorted out the problem a treat! Used it in with an oil change!

Use oil flusher with an oil change. Use STP when the oil as been in the engine for 6 months, as when the oil has started to break down.

If the tappets are what i think they are (remember - i never remember the real names) then VW were around 13quid each.

I'd buy the VW part as they will be original and not pattern parts.

Aloha,

If it is pinking rather than tappets (as suggested) might be the knock sensor?
