Tappety tappety tap
« on: 04 September 2003, 20:46 »
My MkII 8v has developed an annoying sticking tappet, Ive had various advice such as

flush with oil/paraffin mix,
buy some engine flushing agent and try that
buy a new engine!

Im nearly resigned to the fact that I will have to replace the tappet but I just thought Id ask if any of you had similar problems and had tried flushing it out.

I've not done it, Hazels Audi hasn't got that bad..........yet!!
But I have heard, flushing it through does work. Might be worth a try.

Wynns flushing oil is good, you can get it at Halfords. Run the engine at idle only until the cooling fan has cut in a few times then drain it all and fill up with fresh oil. Got to be worth a try.

Be worth trying the flusher first, also maybe change the grade oil and see if that helps.

Might be worn out, whats the mileage?

The tappets do become very worn at over 90-100k if the car isn't properly serviced in its life. Try the oil flush otherwise get a new set of tappets.

Hi

Had the same problem on my 8V. Starting using Shell Optimax & the tapping stopped. If for any reason I can't get Optimax & have to fill up on the normal stuff the tapping comes back.

My tappets are the same, GOLFVR6 how much are a new set of tappets have you any idea? and thanks for all the advice, my car's done 137,000 and like you said they start to wear between 90-100, 000 if the car has not been serviced properley, which i don't now because i bought it at 135,000 so they probably need doing.

Thanks again!

How odd? Although I readily recommend using Optimax I can't see how it would effect tappet noise.
Pinking which is more of a rattling noise under load, would benefit from Optimax.
Are you sure it is tappet noise that you have?
