Is that really safe running the track rod end underneath 

If you lose the nut and it drops out, you have had it really.

My friends have done it on their 6n and 1.8T corrado with no issues a lot of corrado owners do it, supposedly corrects the geometry of a lowered car.

Loctite it as well.

It'll be fine as long as you use a nylock nut and poss loctite to be super safe you'll be fine most of the land rovers I work on are bolted in like that.
