I'd be thinking about valves out for a clean up, reseat and new stem seals while the head's off. -Maybe get the Dremel for some more excitement.

If you'd like another KR lump to prepare while you continue to drive (smokily) around I've got one sat in the corner that you can have for £50..

Good luck

Cheers for the offer but mine has had a little work on it. Audi TT big end bearings, lowered compression con rods. I know its not much but It just means that I would have to strip two engines at the same time so kinda defeat the point and save me about an evenings work

his only option is to whip the head off and look,   it unlikely to be a head gasket issue but it the price you have to pay for haveing a look.

as it's suffering low cr on 1 and 4 its unlikely to be HG  anyway   my money is on a piston/ piston ring issue,

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

easy fix tho,  drop the sump undo the big end caps and push the littel buggers up.

I would leave the offset bushed rods out the equation thins time,   you ether want a second hand set of audi s2 pistons and rods ,  a set of 8 valve pistons with notches cut in them  with std KR rods or a set of proper pistons and rods

But then that means changing the big end bearings too along with re-grinding the crank to suit. The rods arent a problem, I recon the rings are playing up cos she was running lean at about 4k. I need to rebuild and then fack off down to stealth racing for a tune up

So having never been this involved in an engine before.... how do I strip her down to the head?

Right, even though I seem to be talking to myself here I have had a quote tonight for £180 + parts (which I supply). How does this sound for rings and head gasket?

doing rings is piece of piss.

put engine to TDC,  drain oil coolant, remove manifolds, remove cam belt coverm remove camelt, remove cam cover,  undo head bolts, lift cyl head.

remove sump,  undo big end caps,  push pistons up and out.

hone bores, fit new rings to pistons, use rng compressor to squish them,  and refite everything.
