New exhaust + gearbox change
« on: 05 March 2011, 13:07 »
In about a week im going to take the golf apart and take me the gearbox off - its a bit tired and is getting a replacement. When doing this its getting new clutch/cable/engine mounts etc. i am also planning on putting a new exhaust on it as the baffles have gone on mine. will also be replaing the PS rack as it has alot of play.

So i have a couple of questions

is GSF the best place to get a new exhaust from? Should i go for a 16V exhaust as its larger bore?

and does anyone have any tips for changing a gearbox? was planning on taking the engine out with the box and putting it on my stand, then i can get to the rack easy, and the gearbox change is easy too.

also any other tips/hints would be nice, first time playing with golf engines

To replace the steering rack the subframe needs lowering anyway.

might be worth looking at a set of poly-bushes for it, as you're taking it all appart anyway.  Got mine from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-MK3-8v-Front-Bushes-Polyurethane-/280631103942?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4156ead1c6 - just fitting them at the moment..... :-)

Includes stearing rack bushes and subframe ones, so easy whilst its all apart.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Cheers for that, bit out of my budget at the mo.

Does anyone know if the mk3 8v AGG has a spigot bearing in the flywheel?
