Hold out for the right car

i got mine a 91 j plate valver in royal blue 2 owner (in the same family from new) with 75k on the clock for ?1650

needed a good clean but that was about it.  its in daily use and aslong as you look after them they are reliable. 

Better than all this electronic stuff that you have to pay over the odds at a stealership to even have looked at and not always fixed. 

i would deffinatly buy another

  it might have been luck but I got my 89 16 Valver for ?700 2 weeks ago.

i got me a '87 16v 5 owners, 3 door, 135k for ?425 from ebay, needed 2 front bushes, new rear calipers and an exhaust! so not too bad, and she is pullin like a train an driven every day

If you know its been looked after and you keep it serviced, these cars r solid.

Just shy of 300000 miles on my small bumper 88 8v. Bought it at 104,000 miles and use it for twitching  and 300+ hard miles a week for work. In those miles she has caused me problems on three ocassions - the water pump, a gassing up problem because I didnt stop after the pump went quick enough, and finally the gearbox casing fragging at 280K.

In short - reliable, but you have to stay ontop of the maintenance as parts will go and keep it serviced and watch out for tell tale signs of things going (knocking joints etc).

The really big thing to watch out for is getting so hooked you cant move onto newer lesser cars!

Tell me about it, since discovering mk2 golfs the newest car I have ever owned was 8years old. I could afford a practically new lesser car but my current golfs are 14 & 21years old!!!

Thanks for all the posts, holding out for the right one, is the way to go but I'm too impatient, all the interesting ones seem to be miles away !

I bought a tidy 89 GTI 8V 125k  s'steel ex, induction kit, lowered, 15" stilautos..
 
with a mot fail sheet for a strut top mount.. ?9 from GSF for ?280 
 
I have been driving it 60+miles everyday since september with no problems

I bought a J reg 8v a year ago for ?1400. It had a new engine and from what I can gather a  new gearbox as well.  It has given me very little grief to be fair.  A couple of oil and water leaks (rocker cover gasket, thermostat housing, header tank - all cheap bits).  It does me for a very enjoyable 300 miles per week and I love it.  I'd like to try a valver but I've heard that they are not so good for town driving.  I may buy a rough one to do up.
