Mk 2 Gti for ?1200 - Everyday driver ?
« on: 08 March 2005, 17:19 »
Newbie here, need some help as my thought process maynot be entirely straight...cars make my brain malfunction...

Always wanted a mk1 GTI, but think most of them for under ?1500 likely to need serious money spending on them to be right, whereas a small bumper mk2 for the same money is likely to be structurally sound (may have a couple of rust scabs but sorted for say ?300-500.  And there seem to be several mk2s around with history and mileage between 70k and 80K

So we know these exist ?. ideally max 2 owners, under 100Kmiles, FSH, no major rust problems but is it realistic to still expect them to be reliable, hassle free daily drivers ?

I ve spotted a couple on e bay/vwm online that look great candidates, what do you think ?

I think it depends on the previous owners. If they are enthusiasts then they will have been looked after very well but the price of them would probably be high. Depends on what you want out of it really?

for 1200 you can find a mint one these days

I bought my 90spec Mk2 8v for ?600 with 134,000 on the clock (FSH upto 109,000)

It needed a new gearbox (?170 fitted) and so far I've fitted a new crankvent grommet (?2.28) and all new engine mounts (?70).

I drive it to work and back everyday, a round trip of 50 miles, it's done 2,000 miles so far and it's not let me down.

I'm more than happy that it won't let me down (touch wood).

its really pot luck to find the right car. i wish you luck.

a friend bought a "mint" valver whilst mine was being rebuilt. this mint car was top money, and was very fast. had low mileage, leather interior (as standard from VAG), PAS, and was oak green. loads of money had been spent on the car - but when you looked closer at it the quality of the work was sh*te. screws were different or missing, trim had been removed and put back badly, the heater motor had been fiddled with by someone who didnt know how to get it off - but they succeeded. the list was endless. it was sold fairly sharpish.

the strange thing is the Rover 827 i bought last year off Ebay for ?137. if it wasnt as addicted to petrol as jv's rallye i'd have it as a daily driver.

the 827 was in a different "old car" league. i am the 8th owner, it has an original 93k on the clock when i bought it, however, nothing in the car has been f*cked around with. the interior is not ripped, the mechanics are pretty good, but best of all - the engine bay is covered in the same old oil that shows no one has been messing around with the engine. and the engine is absolutely sweet.

it took a bit of time to get rid of its gremlins, eg new radiator, and oil flush to get rid of the Legend Tick, but very nice car at the end of the day.

if i was looking for an old car again - i'd be looking for something in the same condition as the Rover - something that hasn't been screwed around with.

The bloke at my local garage is a big gti nut, he had a spare recon box lying around that he'd stripped from a car he'd bought for spares.  I thought ?170 fitted was a good price
