You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

yeah - check for battery voltage (> +12v) on pins 1 & 3 on the coil feed.  Also check whilst cranking that 12v pulses seen between 2 & 3 on the feed.  You'll need a test light and/or multimeter for this

yes mate! one day my car just stopped it done my head in! i had no spark so replaced coil, dizzy, ripped out alarm and had it checked, replaced all plugs and leads and crank sensor which was in a bad way, turned out to be a earth fault on ecu due to crank sensor wires touching...when i plugged in vag com i got error message BATTERY + or something like that, basically ment no power to ecu...took me 3 months to find problem..some chap on here had a ecu with key(chip) imb,and ring leader for £75....plugged it all in and BINGO of she went

Ok now it's running I have a new problem. When I start the car from cold it runs for about 20-30 mins then cuts out. If I try to start it again it cuts out straight away but if I leave it for 5 mins it starts but only runs for about 5 mins, the colder it is the longer it runs. The fuel pump struggled a bit yesterday then stopped and the car cut out, so I thought the relay was dodgy (is new from vw) so I pulled it out tonight and linked it out with wire so the pump was live and it still cut out and the pump stayed on.

Anyone help?

ecu relay would be next on the list. does sound a lot like the new crank sensor is faulty, as this is exactly what my cheap ass new one did...
