I would plug it into vagcom before you do anything.

It'll tell you if the crank position sensor or any other sensors are failing.

id say crank sensor, even if its not you need to replace it as the bare wires means it will fail soon if it hasnt already.
as you say if the factory immob was kicking in the car would fire for a couple of seconds then cut out.

nah it won't the mk3 ecu doesn't appear to be that clever.

If the crank position sensor has broken wiring, then replace it.  GSF for about £50 or dealer for about £200!!

yeah the crank sensor diagnostics are a bit hit and miss, mine did tell me when mine was playing up though. problem is if its sending no signal at all the ecu will just think car isnt cranking over! luckily mine was just sending bad signals so ecu could tell and told me the readings were 'implausible'

Same thing with me. It's worth a shot plugging it into vagcom I guess!

I guess as always it depends on how-bad-it-is.  as you say - no signal the car assumes no cranking, but a bad enough signal to cause rough running but not trip the ecu parameters is also possible.  Later cars (more modern ECU's) are better at this I think.

where are you getting it from, some are better than others! got mine for about that off ebay and it were crap, broken out of the box with the symptoms you describe. was not chuffed as it meant i couldn't get the car MOTed and had to walk to work while i waited for a replacement from a better supplier
