Tinny scraping noise coming from back wheel
« on: 04 February 2011, 16:47 »
hello,

Pulling up to the house this evening I suddeny heard what sounded like a tinny scraping noise coming from the left back wheel. It is a difficult noise to pin down but its one that you really dont want to hear with a new car. Sounded like i was dragging something but when i have looked around the wheel I cant see anything.
I have booked the car in on Monday but wanted to hear anyones thoughts on this to ease my worry.

Any thoughts?

Gravel between the brake disk shield and the disk? Try reversing to see if it clears it, then drive forward.

ah well, I did reverse and it did cease. However when i continued it started again until i stopped in my parking place. The noise does sound something like when you brush against the brake disc when cleaning the wheels so your idea seems like a good one. What can i do about it?

Try tapping the metal back plate, at the bottom, with a screw driver, done this a couple of times and the stone has fallen out.

Thanks, I will try this. So, you have heard this noise also?

A guy I know in Germany called out their equivalent of the AA to his Passat because of the noise and it turned out to be this. Seemingly quite a common problem

Ive had this problem as have a few others. Its just a stone stuck between the brake disc and stone guard metal plate at the rear of the disc.
Wait till the discs have cooled down then push the metal black back plate abit in differernt locations the stone will fall out.
I had it happen to me not long after i got mine and it was a bit of a shock driving down the road making such a scraping noise.

Thanks very much. Feeling at ease now. After reading the brake disc suggestion i have had a google and the descriptions i have read are the same as my symptoms.
Thankyou very much for the help

Looks like you have your answer - it was going to be my reply too

I also had a piece of gravel caught between my disc and pad once - now that made a hell of a noise when I braked and didn't do my disc or pad any favours either
