Tinny scraping noise coming from back wheel

I went outside and tried to jiggle the metal plate (couldn't get too much movement, do you have to be quite stern with it?). The noise was there a little when i reversed but soon went away. I dont think i really did anything but the noise has gone.
 Is there any point in keeping the appointment with VW so that they can maybe take wheel off and have a good look? The posts would seem to say that this is just something which happens but goes away and not alot to worry about.

Give them a ring and explaiun that the noise has not repeated itself and ask that you cancel the appointment but will ring them if the noise returns (that way they'll know you're not a time waster and if you need to book the car in, in the future they might just remember this

Had a similar thing the other day, sounded like metal clanging from the rear left wheel. I could only hear it as I pulled away. I gave the metal plate a knock & it has the same clanging sound. The noise seems to have gone now so I can only assume that the offending item/stone has dislodged itself.
