Alloy wheel locking bolts - BBS VZ033 on a MK5 Golf
« on: 02 February 2011, 20:30 »
Hi all - I'm new to this forum and this is my first real post (after posting on a set of BBS's in the classifieds and buying them!)

So I got myself some 8J * 18 BBS VZ033 wheels (thanks to markymark).  Received them this morning and they'are already at the garage getting a single scuff taken out of them.

So I have some V2 R32 wheels on at the moment with VW caps for the bolts.  I dont want the VW bolt caps on the BBS's so I was wondering what types of bolts people use for these type of wheels?

I guess I need 60 degree cone bolts(which I am already using) - can anyone confirm this?

Also, my current locking bolt is black, where all of the other bolts are of a polished finish.  Can anyone point me to a set of polished locking bolts for my size? I have a MK5.

I would prefer something with this type of head if possible - http://www.performancealloys.com/images/LockBolt.jpg

Thanks!

What does everyone think of these?
http://www.alloywheels.com/product.asp?P_ID=911&strPageHistory=search&strSearchCriteria=any&PT_ID=all&Make=Volkswagen&Model=Golf%20Mk5&strSize=all&searchSize=all&strSort=Low

Does anyone know the thread size (e.g 12*1.5mm) and the overall/thread length that I need?

Cheers

Welcome aboard Ian.

The thing about VZ033s are that they were made by BBS especially for Volkwagen. Unlike most aftermarket wheels the VZ033s came with the correct size bore hole in the centre (needing no spigot rings), and could use original VW bolts. The bolt holes were also the correct size for the OEM wheel nut covers to fit.
Are your R32 wheels original VW ones? If so try the oem bolts with the BBSs to make sure they will protrude enough through the bolt hole to locate the wheel safely. The oem ones have about 27mm thread, so you will be able to gauge from trial fitting those whether the aftermarket bolts you want will be long enough to fit correctly and thus be able to order the correct length.

Here's a picture of my old VZ033s with original bolts and nut covers (the nut covers cost about 30 odd pence each from VW)

Thanks for the info!

I have R32 reps and they came with a full set of cone shaped bolts - sold the other ones with the old wheels and just kept the locking bolt.

Will the cone shaped bolts still fit OK in the VZ033's or is it best to buy a full set of new bolts too?

Please tell me the cone-shaped bolts will fit.

Called VW to get a quote for a set of 16 bolts and 4 locking bolts - £100.55

>Ouch< That's a rather handsome amount of money!
I'm sure there will be forum members close to you who will have a set of OEM bolts you could buy if it's those you need, shove a wanted ad up in the relevant section, or contact local scrapyards etc. Any VW bolts for alloy wheels will fit from the mk4, mk5 or mk6 Golf, Polos etc as long as you check the thread length. These things cost very little second hand and the bolt caps are only 30 odd pence from VW.
I'm fairly certain that the VZ033s take the round bolts, ask Mark what he used. My wheels were sold some time ago so I can't check.

Mark isnt sure what type of bolt it is.

I asked a guy on ebay (thenutsandboltsshop) who said I need radius seated bolts for the VZ033's - he can supply them for £35 delivered.

Will the cone bolts be ok for a couple of days until I receive the new ones if I had to order them? - doesnt seem like it because they dont stay very straight when in place!

Problem is that I planned to get the tyres swapped over this saturday as I wont have time for about a month after that!

There's bound to be a scrap yard close to you with a mk4 or mk5 Golf (Octavia, Passat, Jetta, Leon etc etc) in there. Just get on the blower to the local scrappies and find out which one has a suitable car in stock. They'd only charge you a few quid for the bolts, probably including the VW lockers as well.
I'd loan you mine for a few weeks if you were close enough, but as I'm in the deepest darkest South West I doubt that 's the case. Shove a wanted ad up quick and also on mk5golfgti.co.uk forum as there's probably a member close enough to you with a set going spare or even loan you a set for a few weeks.
I wouldn't risk fitting wheels to your car with the wrong bolts, begging for trouble (unless you're only going a mile or so down the road and back) and your insurance would make a meal of it if anything happened.

You can worry about the bolt covers at a later date, there's loads of VAG ones that will fit the OEM bolts, even the super shiny ones from the Toerag will probably fit okay. Audi do darkish grey ones, Skoda and SEAT do black ones that are hex shaped and there's the round ones like on my wheels which are standard on a mk5 and mk6 Golf.

As I said via text message, the bolts I used were the std ones fitted to the MK5 GTI, not sure which type they are. It might be worth a call to Phil at PW Motorsport who is the BBS guru!
