MK2 door speaker wiring
« on: 31 January 2011, 21:23 »
Got some door speakers to replace the dash speakers in the mk2, planning on disconnecting the wiring from the dash speakers and crimping new wire onto the original ones and feeding them to the door pods.
My question is, where can I feed the speaker wire through the dash so it goes from the dash speakers to the hole in the door near the hinge?

Cheers!

your better off ignoring the dash speaker side and jus runnin a fresh feed from the the back of the head unit...much simpler way.
Tryin to add extension from the dash to go to the door is a big faff to be honest...you could perhaps leav the wire for those dash speakers there n implement tweeters their perhaps and jus modifying the speaker wiring behind the head unit to cater to the new setup. I would do it that way if it was me. But everyone is to their own methods i gues. either way...your going to have to run wire through the door aperture to go into the door and then through the card to the pod wher the new door speakers are going to sit.
Why pay big bucks when you can do it yourself???

Not sure I quite understand you mate.
I was planning on taking off the spade terminals that connect to the dash speakers, that way it's reversible. Plus if I go from the back of the HU I'd have to feed the new wires all through the dash, where as if I connect to the dash speakers I only need to feed a small length of wiring past the fuse box and glove box to the door aperture and into the door.
Just need to know where I can feed the wiring tucked in the dash from the dash speakers.
Cheers!

wel..i was suggesting if you wantd to add enhanced tweeters in the space of the current dash speakers..then u cud have made use of the existing wiring in place there.....and then run a fresh feed for the door speakers. However...if that is not of your taste...then simply remove the cover for the dash speakers....unbolt the speakers...u may need s short stubby screwdriver to do so..think the angle can b awkward cus of the windscreen in the way. Remove speaker to expose the wires connected...add your addition extension to them wires and probly best to run the wires from the top working down..least its easier to feed downwards than it is to go upwards. You should expose a gap to play with upon removal of speaker..even if it means jus goin from the unpart of the speaker location towards the A pillar...coming out the side n then running the wire down the side where the door meets the car. Then when you reach the bottom, loop it bak into the car to feed it through the loom which runs from the car to the door.

I often try to implement the use of bycycle spokes taped together as a means f feeding wire throuh tight spaces. Or even a metal wire hanger.

Hope that helps somewhat...goodluck with it.

oh right I get you now!
Yeah, the angle is a right bugger, not even a stubby worked when I tried, had to use a posi drill attatchment and some pliers to get the speaker grill off, needed a small ratchet screw driver but the only place that sold them wanted 30 odd quid for it
Gonna try and keep the wires as tucked as possible, got a straightened out wire coat hanger I use.
Cheers for your help mate!

i wouldnt suggest using a straightened out wire coat hanger to feed cables through  as they have sharp corners on the end you have straightened out and can snag things rip through wire insurlation etc you are much better off stripping it apart untill you have enough access to do it properly

Finally sorted it, the most awkward part was getting the speakers out of the dash, had to use a screwdriver drill attatchment and pliers as I couldn't even get a stubby in to remove the screws.
Then removed part of the dash under the steering wheel (manual compartment and fuse flap, and the tray underneath the passenger glove box, bout 5 screws holding each in)
Easily fed the coathanger through the top where the speakers were down to underneath the dash, taped the speaker cable and pulled it through.
Then fed the coathanger and speaker cable through to the door, slit the rubber grommets and tucked it behind the insulating wall and through the grommets, cut a hole in the door cards behind the speaker pods and jobs a good un  :nerd:

Looks odd without the rubber boot that carries the window wiring and central locking gubblins into the door. I guess yours doesn't have that. I'd consider getting a pair of boots to protect the wires and look a bit more oem if it were mine.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Aye, forgot to put them on first when I took this picture, but I did put them on [see grommets]
Dont have central locking or electric windows though  :embarassed:
