Coolant hole on side of engine? No idea!!!

Hi,
I was working on my Mk1 DK engine today and noticed that some sort of coolant bung on the engine has gone 




Could anyone tell me firstly how this has may have come out? Secondly is it easy to replace? And lastly what it is called and where I can get one / Price etc?

Do you mean a core. Plug? If so it may have frozen over if its been sat with no anti freeze in...try vw or gsf ecp

Does it just hammer in? Or does it need a sealant or spot weld?

It should just hammer in. It is designed to pop out and allow ice to expand if you are a complete f**ktard like me and not crack the block

Those are core plugs mate and yes the ones in the link you posted are correct. However, you might as well buy genuine from vw, especially as they are actually cheaper than vwheritage!

Part number is; 036 103 113A £1.69 + vat

They are push fitted into place using a socket the same size, you can put a small amount of sealant around them before you push them in if you like but not really necessary.

On a side note I am having trouble starting my engine after leaving for a year.

This wouldn't be an indication of any problems would it? (head gasket comes to mind)

Just posted in your other thread and now spotted this... I would be slightly worried that this block has frozen whilst full of water!.. Might be worth doing a compression test if you can get hold of a tester to ensure all is well as this may relate to your starting problems.

Oh dear.

Thing is it has hardly any water in it as I have a coolant leak leading the length of the van to the radiator. I am trying to get the engine to start before I deal with it.

I did a pressure test last year when engine was running ok and they were all withing tollerence. Will check again. I did have to replace the head gasket after having a manifold bolt removed and helicoiled last year. I am thinking I didnt torque the head bolts up correctly or damaged the gasket when fitting

Anything else can cause these caps to blow out?

System over pressurising due to possible gasget issues maybe?

Lack of antifreeze, they tend to pop if the water freezes.
