Crank position sensor is my guess! If you do a search there are pages and pages on this.

no these are not fault codes, they are engine codes. This code can be found on the white sticker that is normally in the boot of your car and stuck inside the cover of your VW service book.

symptoms of a faulty crank sensor are exactly what you describe in your first post, my ABF engine did exactly the same :)
