Hi-fi speakers

Not exactly ice related but sure someone will be able to help.

Right my has has a sony hi-fi system with some rather large ugly speakers, he wants to replace them with smaller speakers, but i can see a possible problem, which is that the speakers have 4 cables, two normal ones and 1 driving the sub woofer built into each speaker, would it be possible for him to get some speakers with the normal two connections on and wire it up somehow, with out it sounding like a bag of nails.

Anyway - depends what connections there are on the amplifier. If there subwoofers then i doubt that there are seperate channels like a car amp. So it depends how they have split the outputs for low frequency.
Have a look a the back of the amp and see how the speaker connections are set up.

Cheers len, am going to give it a go tommorrow and see what happens, just saves my dad buying a new hi-fi when all he wants is a new set of speakers.

might sound like a bag of nails if the ohms on the speakers are different, check the rating on the rear of the speakers shove a higher rating on and you'll be cranking the system right up to get any decent bass if any.

I may be able to help here,
Sorry about the time delay but I only joined the forum a couple of days ago...
It sounds to me like the speakers are bi-amped, which is essentially similar to a sub crossover system, splitting high and low frequencies.
When the amp was originally made it should have come with two gold-plated inserts which bridged the hi and low poles on the amp. You would normally connect the speakers to the high frequency and the links would do their job.
If you re link them and use speakers of equal resistance (normally 8ohms for sony home gear)  then you will be fine, actually sony amps normally work well with anything between 16 and 6 ohms.
