« on: 20 February 2005, 21:50 »
can  anyone please confirm how much oil my x pllate golf gti 2.0 litre should be using  after  oil and filter change three months ago  oil light has now come on  and dipstick was low.approx 2000 miles covered.no obvious external leaks emissions ok,is this just general consumption.golf garage cannot find a fault.just concerned never had to put oil in on a reg basis.

also judder on tick over when 800 revs no probs when starting engine at 1000 revs again no garage fault found mechanics state normal for car type.

any advice welcome

Sorry to tell you guys but the MK4 2.0 GTI suffers from piston ring wear after 50k

Obviously the VW dealer will deny it!!? But a mate is a VW master tech!!

Use 15/40 for higher mileage engines

As for the judder!! Remove the throttle body and clean it with a cloth and carb cleaner..

I have been told that it common to use a litre between servicing, though it certainly shouldnt be juddering.  My old MK4 did use up to that between services but seemed saound apart from that.  Check out the breathers as well as they seem to get clogged up duuring the winter.   I was told by my maindealer that aircon units are supposed to make noise, 6 months later the bearings failed and was all repaired under warrenty.

If in doubt get it checked independently.
