Welding Wheels has cropped up a few times now

So for all of you who want to read -

I can believe that an alloy needing welding and deemed as scrap by most 'garages' and then repaired can invalidate insurance. Would like to know more about this as it seems a very untouched area, ie, what happens if the wheel fails and is deemed the cause of a fatality in a RTA? Who gets put up for manslaughter?

It would be the owner of the company that repaired the wheel.

This is exactly my point that i made in the banded alloy thread. This is why i would have it done properly where they check it after and certify the wheel is safe.

A family member of mine works in the oil and gas industry and we were talking about welding the pipelines. Their are so many checks that they carry out to ensure that the pipes are welded to tight regulations. A pipeline has extreme pressure and stress.

All I am suggesting is that is no industry standard that can regulate bad repairs. May look good on the outside but a bit of contamination could be the end for someone further down the road!

thats a risk each individuall is willing to take tho isnt you put that wheel back on at your own risk..  a brand new wheel is likely to have defects and could fail as well.. Its just a risk we run..

Not really, with new wheels oem and manufacturers, they have set quality standards in place................................

with the banded wheels if doing it through a reputable company the weld will be certificated after testing, this is the only route i would personally take. welded alloys just plain sound iffy to me.

just found this:

very clean in their workshop i must say! :lipsrsealed:

no mention of certification though.

It's the image on the front screen that terrifies me to be honest.

I would never drive round on a rim that had suffered this much damage and it scares me to think that there is some old bloke in his dirty shed churning out accidents waiting to happen. If someone i know had a rta because of a repaired wheel his insurance would be the last thing on his mind !!!
