8v GTI AGG Will not start
« on: 05 January 2011, 00:13 »
Hi

My 97plate 8v Gti Agg will not start. Its been fine up until this morning, It is turning over but will not start. **Not a FLAT battery or the starter motor**

Anyone got any ideas?? I've removed the HT Leads and sprayed some wd40 hoping its a damp problem but still not starting.

Urgent.....

Cheers.

Is the engine getting fuel? Blocked fuel lines/fuel filter?

so its turning over freely??
mine, al be it 2e... does this on occasion, blow out the king lead going from the dizzz to coil pack, if no luck, then get a scrappy coil pack, would put money on being a burnt out coil pack, ive gone through 4!
think they kept burning out cos the car hunteed olike a b!tch for a while, didnt have a problem again after that, hth :)

take a plug out, leave the HT lead on it and place the spark plug so its side rests on a metal bit (aka grounded bit) of the engine block.  Make sure its not going to move.   Or go get a set of spark-plug testers from halfords/factors etc.  they go between the lead and the plug and light up when a spark is produced.

Crank engine (hands clear) and watch for the blue spark.  If no spark, take the king lead (lead between the ign coil and dizzy) and connect to spark plug from before.  Cranks again and watch.  No spark at all = its likely to be the coil. No spark at plug ends  = its likely to be dizzy (cap / arm) related.

Make sure ignition is off when you are working under the bonnet and you'll be fine.

Cheers,

J
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

I'll make note of that. thanks.

I've just took off the HT lead from the coil to the dizzy and blew the WD40 i sprayed on it earlier....

Started the car and whey hey its started but struggling to keep running.... few revs and its stable...... took for a spin and still ok just left running for 10 mins in idle to hopefully dry out the moisture....

I'm ashuming my coil is ok then?? and just had a damp problem do u think???

yeah could be damp.  Also worth taking the dizzy cap off and drying the inside with kitchen role, etc.   Made a difference to my AGG when I did it at the weekend - and there was a little moisture in there.
