Bloody B@stard Pot Holes!!
« on: 04 January 2011, 22:04 »
So I was driving home earlier and due to a van coming the other way down a country lane at a stupid speed I hit a rather big pothole, or 2

The rim doesn't appear to be damaged and the tracking is still ok, however when I pulled onto my drive something didn't sound right  :undecided:

There was a slight rattling/tapping noise coming from the back of the engine bay, my initial thought was that its the manifold heat shield. However when I revved the engine a little it got worse (as you would expect), but back box was rasping and popping a bit as if the exhaust was blowing somewhere.

I took the car for a drive around the block and sure enough it sounds like the manifold is blowing

Is it possible that hitting the pothole has caused a crack in the manifold? Bearing in mind i'm on hotuning coilivers that are as solid as a rock, so any minor bump in the road is amplified massively anyway.

a pot hole could easily kill a manifold! and there are not usually repairable (my passat one is cracked and I've tried all sorts to fix it!)
best get under the bonnet and have a check around! (hopefully it wont be serious?)

Grab a second hand manifold. U can't repair them. Weld them and they will expand when warm and the weld will fall out.

Where all my moneys went.

Ive welded no end of cast manifolds and never had a problem :undecided: Give it a good prep gouging the crack out a bit better to get better penetration and use some 2.5 Ni-CL cast rods to fill and the same again to cap.
Never had any weld fall out yet

Cast rods are expensive  :undecided:

Well I'm afraid I can't advise heading south to get away from them - we got some pretty good open cast mines in the roads down here in Devon too!
